Ready to take the next step in your leadership journey?

Governance Essentials is a one‑day course from the Institute of Directors (IoD) designed to give you a practical introduction to how boards work and what good governance looks like. It’s ideal for athlete leaders who are new to governance, currently serving on committees or advisory groups, or thinking about taking on a board or leadership role in the future.

The course covers the fundamentals every effective director or committee member should understand:

  • what directors and boards are responsible for

  • core legal and ethical frameworks

  • how strategy and risk are managed

  • how board dynamics work and how you can positively influence them

These skills are valuable across sport, business, community and leadership—especially for athletes who are often asked to represent the athlete voice, sit on panels, or contribute to decision‑making groups.

Delivered in partnership with the Athlete Leaders Network, this opportunity is designed to strengthen the governance capability across our athlete community. You’ll come away with practical tools, increased confidence, and a clearer understanding of how to ask the right questions and contribute at a governance table.

If you’re currently in a leadership role, supporting athlete advocacy, or exploring future governance pathways, we encourage you to submit your expression of interest here.
