Building athlete leaders through governance education
The recent Athlete Leaders Network (ALN) Governance Workshop, delivered in partnership with the Institute of Directors (IoD) and facilitated by Kevin McCaffrey, marked an important step forward in strengthening athlete leadership across the sector.
A bespoke workshop for athlete leaders, it focused on building practical governance literacy — demystifying boards, responsibilities, decision‑making processes, and how athletes can engage confidently and effectively in governance spaces.
Rather than positioning governance as top-down or only for corporate suits, the session centred on real‑world examples relevant to sport, athlete advocacy, and long‑term organisational integrity.
What we learnt from the athletes in the room:
Confidence:
Athletes spoke about gaining the confidence to enter governance environments with a clearer understanding of what’s expected, how decisions are made, and where their voice can have impact.
Relevance:
Participants valued governance being taught in a sport‑specific context, connecting principles directly to athlete wellbeing, integrity, and sustainable system outcomes.
Preparedness:
Many athletes described feeling more prepared to contribute meaningfully — not just representatively — when participating in boards, commissions, and leadership forums.
These insights reinforced a strong appetite among athletes for high‑quality, fit‑for‑purpose governance education.
Why governance education matters
Athletes are increasingly invited into leadership and governance roles, yet often without structured development to support them. Without this foundation, participation risks being tokenistic rather than impactful.
Governance literacy equips athletes to:
understand roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities
ask better questions
engage in ethical decision‑making
contribute to long‑term organisational performance
This workshop made clear that governance education is not about fast‑tracking athletes onto boards — it’s about ensuring athlete voice is informed, credible, and effective.
ALN’s role
This partnership with the IoD reflects ALN’s clear position:
Athlete voice deserves the same professional standards as any other leadership pathway.
By investing in governance capability, ALN is supporting athletes not just to be present — but to lead, influence, and strengthen the systems they are part of.
Thank you to all those who attended and for those interested, stay tuned for where and when the next one will be.
